The photographs of Mary Macpherson – with a dash of poetry

Sort of sad

This week we received the Parson’s bookshop newsletter via snail mail.

But rather than being brimming with the latest photography and art books for sale, it was a communication to say that after 36 years Roger Parsons is retiring and Helen Parsons is morphing into providing another book service.

No one had been found to take over their wonderful specialist art bookshop in Auckland.

The newsletter details the history of the Parsons’ career in books and, of course, after 36 years they are entitled to move on. But from the point of view of one who viewed the bookshop as a site of pilgrimage when in Auckland, I’m depressed. Of course, you can order the latest photography titles over the net, but nothing beats sitting in a beautiful shop turning the pages of books you’ve only seen as teasers on the net, and savouring the decision about which one to buy.

So I am sort of sad…

Here’s a link to the Parson’s Facebook page which is full of tributes to the wonderful shop.
