The photographs of Mary Macpherson – with a dash of poetry

For ink lovers

“To wear the smell of a book is something very chic”.

So says the promotion on the website of legendary photo book publisher/printer Gerhard Steidl. The German maestro has teamed with Karl Lagerfeld, perfumer Geza Schoen, and Wallpaper magazine to produce a perfume based on the smell of newly printed books called – Paper Passion.

Steidl, whose publishing list features a galaxy of photographic and artist names, including Lagerfeld, should know something about the delicious smell of fresh ink on excellent paper.

“This is an opportunity to celebrate all the glorious sensuality of books, at a time when many in the industry are turning against them. The idea is that is should relax you, like when you read a book, to a level of meditation and concentration, ” says the promotion.

Personally I’d just like to own more Steidl books, but smelling the perfume would be good too. It’s worth viewing the luxurious packaging, based, of course, on a book.

  1. I do like the smell of books, though I’m not sure I would like to smell like a book. I think one would have to sniff it first before making any judgments.
