Going home on the bus after yesterday’s torrent of rain, the wet pavements and late grey evening, listening to Marian Halligan’s The Fog Garden with its sinuous prose and shape shifting story about grief, I felt like I was underwater – I could have easily grown a tail and swam  away over the western hills. Instead, headphones on, I floated up the grunty little hill to home with words as the atmosphere.
