New Zealand’s first photobook fair
One of the things I’ve been working hard on over the last few months with a small talented group of photographers, is helping create Photobook New Zealand – New Zealand’s first photobook fair.
Readers of this blog will know that photobooks are a significant art form for photographers to express themselves, equivalent to novels or major films. They’re where photographers learn from fellow artists and are an important means of sharing work with a worldwide audience. Internationally photobooks are celebrated in photobook fairs in major cities with significant rewards for excellent and innovative work.
We’re working to bring together New Zealand’s photographers and independent publishers and showcase their work to a wide audience interested in the arts and attract international attention to New Zealand’s photobooks.
Photobook New Zealand will run from 11- 13 March in Wellington during the NZ Festival’s Writers’ Week when the city is buzzing with cultural activity. We hope a wide range of people will be attracted to the special collection of photobooks from artists and independent publishers, along with inspiring speakers from New Zealand and Australia talking about their publishing journeys.
It’s New Zealand’s first step into the world of photobook fairs, and a busy ambitious programme to put together (goodbye having a life). We’ve been inviting some exciting speakers and panellists, looking for venues, partners, sponsors and support. Recently we were heartened by the generosity of Massey University’s College of Creative Arts in offering their beautiful arts complex in Tasman St for the event, along with technical assistance. PhotoForum NZ is supporting us by being the umbrella organisation for our event.
Next up will be our Boosted campaign when people can help us make the event fly (yes coming soon to a place near you…). It may be busy and intense but inspiring innovative photobooks are close to my heart so it’s a pretty exciting and energizing activity.
